In response to the National Guard being sent to the University of Alabama to protect African-American students, on June 11, 1963 President Kennedy speaks from the Oval Office to the Nation to commit the full powers of his office to the cause of equal rights. He declared segregation a moral crisis and urged Congress to expedite desegregation legislation.
